The iconic Hollywood sign is one of LA's most famous postcards and no trip to the City of Angels is complete without a photo of this landmark. The 45ft tall and 350ft long Hollywood sign was originally built as "Hollywoodland".
Though it is visible from several places around town, it can get hard to snap a perfect picture of it since it sits on top of Mt Lee. So I've put together all the details on the best and easiest places to see and photograph the Holywood sign for the next time you're visiting La La Land.
Lake Hollywood Park
Lake Hollywood Park is my favorite location to photograph the sign and one of the closest you can get - no hiking required!
Where: Lake Hollywood Park, 3160 Canyon Lake Dr, Los Angeles, CA 90068
Entrance: Free
Parking: Free - Street parking along Canyon Lake Drive
Hours: Sunrise to Sunset
Tip: Great place for a picnic!!!
Griffith Observatory
The Griffith Observatory is the most-visited public observatory in the world and one of Southern California's main attractions. The public observatory, planetarium and exhibition space offers not only beautiful views of the Hollywood sign, but also of entire LA (and on clear days, even the ocean).
Where: 2800 E Observatory Rd, Los Angeles, CA 90027
Entrance: Free
Parking: If you are able to walk up to a mile up hill, you can park for free in the area around the Greek Theatre. Parking near the Observatory and on Western Canyon Road is currently $8.00 - $10.00 per hour and space is very limited.
Hours:
Griffith Observatory
Weekdays (Tuesday - Friday): 12pm- 10pm
Weekends (Saturday - Sunday): 10am- 10pm
Mondays: Closed
Griffith Park is open each day from sunrise until 10pm. There is no admission charge to enter.
Tip: There are lots of hiking trails on Mt. Hollywood from the back corner of the Observatory parking lot!
Hollywood & Highland
The entertainment complex located on the famous Hollywood Blvd offers a different viewpoint of the Hollywood sign and might be the easiest to get to since it's located in the city. So, while you're visiting the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the Chinese Theater and the Dolby Theater (where the Oscars happen every year), you might as well snag a pic of the sign.
Where: 6801 Hollywood Blvd, Hollywood, CA 90028
Entrance: Free
Parking:
Park for up to 2 hours for $3 when validated by participating shops, restaurants and nightclubs.
Park for up to 4 hours for $3 with validation from the TCL Chinese Theatre and the TCL Chinese 6 Theatres. ($2.00 every 20 minutes thereafter.)
Hours:
Monday - Saturday: 10am- 10pm
Sunday: 10am- 7pm
Tip: Some of the best viewpoints of the Hollywood sign is from the overlook platform on levels 2 to 5.
While you're exploring the City of Angels, make sure to visit LA's Secret Swing (I shared how to get there -> click here <- ) and Chinatown in DTLA (read about it here)
Welcome to LA, I hope you love it here.
With Love,
Bella
